Caught up in a moment of boyhood competition, William Bellman recklessly aims his slingshot at a rook resting on a branch, killing the bird instantly. It is a small but cruel act, and is soon forgotten. By the time he is grown, with a wife and children of his own, William seems to have put the whole incident behind him. But rooks don’t forget.… Years later, as a stranger mysteriously enters William’s life, his fortunes begin to turn—and the terrible and unforeseen consequences of his past indiscretion take root. In a desperate bid to save the only precious thing he has left, he enters into a rather strange bargain, with an even stranger partner. Together, they found a decidedly macabre business. And Bellman & Black is born. - (From Amazon.in)

Diane Setterfield is one of my favorite authors when it comes to historical fiction especially for her subtle gothic style of writing. I really enjoyed reading her ‘The Thirteenth Tale’ which made me pick Bellman & Black.

There has not been one moment where I felt like keeping this book aside. The way in which the story was built by the author kept me wondering what will happen next especially when the Rooks were mentioned and the omen that the bought along. Hence, it has certainly been a page turning one.

However, blame it on my expectations from the author, I feel the book could have been better. I really enjoyed reading the book, but I feel the plot and the climax could have been a bit better.  Every time my heart thumped with anticipation that here’s the much awaited climax with a big bang, but nothing of this sort happened till the end.

Bellman & Black is certainly different and has lessons for us to learn, which has been nicely weaved in in this book…time waits for none and no one can own it…It’s how you deal with the situations and make the most out of it. Your actions define your life and the memories built along the way.

If you want me to review any book you have in mind, do drop in your request here. I will certainly acknowledge it and connect with you.
