First book in the series of Myron Bolitar, Deal Breaker by Harlan Coben is about the sports agent Myron, who is waiting for a big break in his career. So is his client, Chirstian Steele a rookie but a talented quarterback. Things go awry when Christian receives a call from his ex-girlfriend, who everyone believes is dead. Thus, affecting the deal badly. Myron dives deep into this case to unravel the truth, which results in unearthing family tragedy, lies and more secrets.

It’s been long since I read a murder mystery novel. One thing that really sets Deal Breaker and Harlan Coben apart is the humor added throughout the novel. A murder mystery usually has a serious environment. However, this one also has a good humor and an amazing character building. Deal Breaker is the first book in the serious of ‘Myron Bolitar’, who is also the protagonist of the novel.

A key thing according to me for any story, especially for a mystery is to set up that suspense environment. It needs to raise multiple questions in the mind of the reader. This book did just that. I was intrigued till the end and also came up with my own assumptions along the way to solve the mystery.

I really liked the flow of the story and it’s pacing. It was a quick read. Moreover, the writing style, especially the narrative by Myron and his response to certain situations added to the fun in reading this novel.

I liked how the author gave the background story of each and every character. Leaving no room for assumptions. Apart from Myron, his friend’s character ‘Win’ was superb.  A straightforward, no non-sense person. He doesn’t have a grey area, it’s either black or white with him. Myron still has grey characteristics attached.

I went through various emotions while reading this book. Felt sad, pity, angry and calm depending on how the plot unraveled. There are certain gruesome parts, but I think they were required to build the plot.

All in all, the story of Deal Breaker is good. Once you pick it up, you won’t feel like keeping it aside. It keeps you guessing with every word you read.  All the puzzle pieces or the questions you have in mind, come together towards the end.  For all the mystery lovers out there, you should surely give this one a try.

If you want me to review any book you have in mind, do drop in your request here. I will certainly acknowledge it and connect with you.
